You will experience the most exciting fly fishing for the strongest saltwater fish imaginable. But saltwater novices should not come with false expectations. It's not easy to outsmart the quick and spooky Trevally. And the bigger they are, the more often they end the fight with bent or broken hooks, broken lines or sometimes even broken rods.
Sight fishing for Trevally or Titan Triggerfish demands the highest skills. It's all about concentration, responsiveness and fast, long and precise casting. In order to succeed with the fly, you should be able to cast at least 20 meters even in windy conditions. Each and every good size fish is a challenge. Experienced saltwater fly fishermen will understand this quickly and appreciate the value of each landed GT or Big Bluefin accordingly.
Our photo gallery below shows you which species of fish in which sizes can be caught on fly. Still, neither pictures nor words can tell how fast and strong they are. You will only know it after you have experienced it yourself.
You only need floating lines in pale colours, or transparent lines, because all the fish are extremely shy and can see very well.
Wading on the flats requires 8 or 9wt gear. So you will be well prepared for Trevally from 1 to 5 kilos, Triggerfish, Queenfish, and smaller Jobfish and Skipjack Tuna. Your reel should hold not less than 200 meters backing. P>
Large opponents require 10 or 11wt equipment with at least 300 meters of backing on the reel. 12 or 13wt rods are the appropriate choice when you want to go for larger Giant Trevally.
